President’s Message

Off to Another Great Start…

Hello UHS Families,

I hope everyone is having a great year thus far. We always seem to hit the ground running in August, but with a senior this year, I am really feeling the old adage, “time flies when you’re having fun.”

The PTSA has been busy having already hosted our Fall Academic Awards Night in September and our Fall Back to School conference dinner for our staff. Congratulations to all students who won awards. If you couldn’t make it to the program, please email uhsptsa@gmail.com to make arrangements for your student to pick up their pin. And a special thank you to all of our Staff Appreciation committee members who helped give our staff a delicious soup/sandwich dinner to keep them energized for those important conferences!

As most of you know, the Board of Education has finally made a decision regarding the Oakdale High School redistricting project. I know some of you may have questions about where you will be next year or about the options for next year’s rising juniors and seniors. The best place for your questions to be answered is the FCPS website at www.fcps.org. There is a map with the current boundaries labeled for downloading and other important bits of information to help make this transition as smooth as possible.

This is also a transition year in regards to the PTSA. Many of our Executive Board Members and Committee Chairpersons are senior parents and will be leaving UHS after this year. I encourage all of you to come our next meeting on Tuesday, October 20th, and spend an hour finding out how the PTSA works for our UHS Families, our students and our staff, and see if there is some area you would like to become involved. There are many committees that are “1 time only” groups, such as Scholarship and Nominating. This PTSA has been an active and integral part of Urbana High School, but without your help and support, these committees and activities may cease to exist. I would personally hate to see this happen. Urbana High School’s outstanding reputation has been earned through our students and staff, sure, but also by our tremendous amount of parental support. In my opinion, a school is only as strong as the foundation it is built on, and Urbana’s strong foundation is its families! I hope you will consider giving a small amount of your time to help make a BIG difference here at UHS. Our meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of the month and last for approximately 1 hour. Your presence, ideas and comments are always welcome. I hope to see you on the 20th!

For the first time the UHS PTSA is teaming up with the Kaplan SAT/ACT prep group to offer an  opportunity for our students to practice the SAT and the ACT at a minimal cost to you. Please look ahead in the newsletter for more information and a registration form for this unique opportunity.
